Chizuma’a Arrest Inquiry Given 14 Days Deadline

President Lazarus Chakwera wants a report in 14 working days on circumstances leading to the questionable arrest of the Anti-Corruption Bureau-ACB director general, Martha Chizuma.

Deputy Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr. Janet Banda says, in a statement, the inquiry shall begin from the day of the Committee’s swearing-in.

The Commission is currently inviting the general public to provide any relevant information and knowledge on Chizuma’s arrest.

Dr. Banda adds the 12-member Committee, chaired by retired Justice Twea, will investigate matters of public and national interest concerning allegations of improper conduct, abuse of office and illegality surrounding Chizuma’s arrest.

A gang of police officers arrested Chizuma in the wee hours of Tuesday this week following a complaint from the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr. Steven Kayuni that the ACB boss injured him in her leaked audio clip in January this year. In the audio, Chizuma was caught discussing office issues with a third party.

But all the charges against her have since been withdrawn amid reports of pressure from the country’s donors and development partners who believe Chizuma’s arrest undermines the Tonse administration’s widely preached gospel on corruption fight.

During the Anti-Corruption Day in Kasungu yesterday, Chizuma spoke tough; saying the bureau would not be afraid of the corrupt officials with money and power.
