The place is Washington DC Convention Centre where at the invitation of the US President Joe Biden, almost 50 African leaders will converge and discuss matters affecting the United States of America and African countries at the summit dubbed U.S. Africa Leaders Summit 2022.
President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is expected to lead a high-level delegation to Washington to take part in this important summit which augurs well with Malawi’s short and long-term development agenda.
According to the White House information, the summit aims to serve as a demonstration of the Biden administration’s commitment to the African continent and provide a forum for new joint initiatives between the United States and African countries.
The summit is the second after former US President Barrack Obama held the inaugural 8 years ago.
That first U.S. Africa Summit in 2014 announced the engagement of new private sector commitments to invest and partner with African countries on initiatives in energy, financial services, climate change, food security and health care, among other areas.
Under Biden’s administration, this year’s summit is expected to prioritise similar issues, while emphasising bilateral trade and investment initiatives.
Dr Chakwera’s delegation will be keen to follow the summit’s new initiatives which are aimed at increasing the U.S. engagement with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Malawi will also focus on the summit’s initiatives that will be aimed at boosting the continent’s recovery from COVID-19, bolstering food security, and promoting investment, infrastructure, health and renewable energy projects, among other priorities.
