Police in Lilongwe have arrested six people on suspicion that they were inciting violence at Kamphata Trading Centre, along the Lilongwe-Dedza M1 road on Thursday, January 5, 2023.
Lilongwe Police Spokesperson Hastings Chigalu says some disgruntled people from the area, mostly vendors, detained a truck carrying Affordable Input Programme (AIP) fertilizer destined for another area within Traditional Authority Kalumbu.
The people alleged that their area is receiving less fertilizer meant for the programme, compared to other places within the area.
After police and other stakeholders intervened, the people released the truck.
Chigalu says the people however mobilized themselves and went to the road where they blocked the M1 road, burning tyres and pelting stones at passing vehicles, and demanding cash from motorists.
Police rushed to contain the situation and arrested the suspects.
