The Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) has closed
Mount Meru Millers which produces cooking oil and soap in Lumbadzi, Lilongwe for failing to manage pollution which has affected several villages.
MEPA’s acting Director General
Benoni Yassin has confirmed the closure of the company on Wednesday.
According to Yassin, Mount Meru Millers Limited was ordered on January 23, 2023 to pay a K5 million fine and to clean-up the entire polluted site and compensate the affected community members.

The company was further ordered to carry out maintenance of its Effluent Treatment Plant but it has not complied with the order.
The company was again ordered to pay K5 million by March 5.
