Shepherd Bushiri, businessman and a prophet of the ECG Church, has pledged support to over 600 households rendered destitute due to Cyclone Freddy in eight camps around Namulenga area in Mulanje West Constituency.
The area has become unreachable following the washing away of two bridges that connect the area to main roads.
Inspecting the extent of the damage on Saturday, Bushiri said he has hired a helicopter that will arrive in the country on Monday to help supply the isolated area with relief items.
“I have adopted all the eight camps and will help the families to build back their lives. We will give them the household supplies that they need and a cash package so that they can start reconstructing their houses,” Bushiri said.
Member of Parliament for Mulanje West, Yusuf Nthenda, said over 1,000 families have been affected in his constituency.
“We need all the support we can get, the people here need food, shelter and other household items. Namulenga has now become an island and the helicopter will be of great help to assist the affected people,” Nthenda said.
