District Commissioner for Phalombe, Douglas Moffat has expressed worry over the growing number of challenges Phalombe District Hospital is facing, one of which being persistent power outages.
Moffat said the district is facing electricity challenges which are making it hard for hospital personnel to effectively discharge their duties, more especially tasks that require electricity.
“Power outages are putting the lives of patients at risk. Phalombe has a backup generator but the biggest challenge has been fuel,” said Moffat.
He was speaking on the sidelines of relief items donated by the Economic Empowerment Fund Limited (NEEF) through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA).
Chief Executive Officer for NEEF, Humphrey Mdyetseni, said NEEF as an agency of government felt obliged to support the cause of alleviating the suffering.
“NEEF has donated K15.5 million worth of items part of which is 2,500 litres of diesel fuel to Phalombe and Mulanje district hospitals to be used in generators,” said Mdyetseni.
“Mulanje and Phalombe have a huge percentage of our clients as an organisation, hence the need to assist the two districts,” added Mdyetseni.
