The Department of Disaster Management has described a recent proposal to use stadiums as evacuation camps as impractical.
Recently, former United Democratic Front, president, Atupele Muluzi, made a proposal of using the country’s stadiums as evacuation camps and not schools.
According to Muluzi, usage of schools as camps in times of natural disasters disturb learning processes.
However, Chipiliro Khamula, spokesperson for the Department has told MIJ Online that the proposal is logistically impossible.
Khamula says, for instance, there are no stadiums in most areas affected by cyclone Freddy a thing which would require the department to transport the victims to Blantyre at Kamuzu Stadium something which is costly.
He has since, said his department is implementing other interventions in order to remove the victims from schools to tents the department is erecting.
