Escom Lost K500 Million In Revenue Due To Collapse Of Prepaid Vending System

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) says it lost about K500 million in revenue during the collapse of its prepaid vending system for three days, last week.

ESCOM’s controller of prepaid vending system, Maxwell Mulimakwenda, however, says the power utility body’s major concern is not the revenue lost, but the impact of production to the majority of Malawians who rely on electricity in running businesses.

“ESCOM now intends to build a parallel pre-paid system data centre to prevent similar future occurrences,” he said.

Meanwhile, the National Association for Small and Medium Enterprise national coordinator, William Mwale has faulted ESCOM for being negligent over the matter which resulted in many SMEs losing revenue.
