“The Board did not appoint Engineer William Kaipa to manage continuity; we appointed him to lead transformation,” Nhlema stated. “The era of silos must end… we must lead as one ESCOM to restore the trust of the nation.”

Strategic Focus: Fixing Malawi’s Power Supply

Within his first week, Kaipa has held high-level engagements with the Board of Directors and is currently undergoing intensive sessions with key committees, including Business Strategy and Risk, as well as Technical and Projects. These engagements are designed to equip him with a comprehensive understanding of ESCOM’s:

  • Electricity generation and distribution challenges
  • Ongoing infrastructure and grid expansion projects
  • Financial position and operational inefficiencies

The move comes at a time when Malawi continues to face persistent electricity outages, making ESCOM’s reform agenda a matter of national urgency.

Mandate: Deliver Results, Not Promises

Board leadership has made it clear that the new CEO’s mission is centered on measurable outcomes. The focus is now shifting away from longstanding operational excuses toward tangible improvements in service delivery.

Kaipa’s mandate includes:

  • Stabilizing Malawi’s electricity supply system
  • Improving operational efficiency within ESCOM
  • Strengthening workforce coordination and accountability
  • Rebuilding public confidence in the national power utility

A Critical Moment for ESCOM
