Political analyst George Phiri has backed the move by Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative CDEDI to hold vigils at attorney general`s office demanding the attorney general Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda to show Malawians proof that he recovered Mwk 750 million meant for affordable input program (AIP).
Phiri said this as CDEDI has announced to hold vigils at attorney general`s office from 12 May this year following the expiry of seven-day ultimatum that CDEDI gave the Attorney general early this month.
Phiri said that attorney general should tell Malawians if the money will be recovered or not and explain why the process of recovery is taking so long to be concluded.
According to the statement that CDEDI released on May 9 and signed by its executive director Sylvester Namiwa, the attorney general owes Malawians explanation as to why no one has been arrested in connection to the scandal despite the sacking of then minister and deputy minister of Agriculture Lobin Lowe and Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima respectively.
CDEDI added that they will not leave the capital hill until attorney general Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda produces evidence of the recovery of Mk750 million or resign.
We tried to seek reaction from Chakaka Nyirenda but he said that he was in the meeting during the time we wanted to interview him.
