United Democratic Front (UDF) on Sunday held a mass rally in Mzuzu as part of its 30th anniversary in the country
Taking the stage as guest speaker, former UDF President Atupele Muluzi has said the turnout at the rally symbolises two things; that the UDF is still strong and that Malawians want change of leadership.
Muluzi said it is sad that Malawi is still poor despite being one of the peaceful countries on the globe.
He said the current situation is as a result of poor leadership.
“As I speak, there is hunger in Karonga. It’s sad that people are being punished for transporting their farm produce within the district.”
Muluzi also questioned the rationale behind the upward adjustment of import duty and other taxes on vehicles by Malawi Revenue Authority.
“Galimoto ya mtundu wa Mira timagula pa mtengo K2 million, pano ili K4.5 million. Pali chilungamo?” he queried.
Further, Muluzi says Malawians cannot wait for 2063 to be a wealthy and self-reliant nation.
“My challenge to everyone is that we can achieve middle income economy between 8-10 years; we cannot wait up to 2063. No.”
He said all the country needs to do is to end corruption.
UDF president Lilian Patel said considering that Malawi Electoral Commission will use National IDs to vote, Malawians must ensure that they acquire the document.
Patel said UDF promotes women and the youth, which most political parties lack.
She then said the party will soon disclose dates for the party’s convention.
