“We Must Change This Government”: Ex-President Dr. Joyce Banda

In a passionate speech at the People’s Party convention in Lilongwe, former President Joyce Banda strongly criticized President Lazarus Chakwera’s government, calling it a “complete failure.” This surprising move comes after her party’s past partnership with Chakwera’s party.

Banda’s words mark a significant shift in her stance, as her party was once a key ally of the ruling coalition. She attacked the government’s handling of critical issues like fuel shortages, food security, and women’s rights, emphasizing the need for change.

“If you want more problems, stick with MCP,” she said, “but if you want change, we’re here to make a difference!” Banda’s message was clear: her party, the People’s Party, is a better alternative to the ruling MCP.

Banda compared the government’s failures to her own presidency from 2012 to 2014, highlighting the stability and efficiency of her administration. “Back then, no one went hungry, and we had enough fuel, so people didn’t have to wait in long lines for gas,” she reminisced.

By speaking out against the government, Banda positions her party as a strong alternative for the next election. Her words have sparked excitement, adding to growing concerns about the government’s management of the economy and basic services. As Malawi faces these challenges, Banda’s voice is a powerful call for change.
