China has handed over satellite television equipment to Malawi’s Ministry of Information and Digitalisation, which will provide TV access to 200 villages. This handover is part of Phase 2 of the “Access to Satellite TV for 10,000 African Villages” project.

Principal Secretary Baldwin Chiyamwaka says access to information is vital for Malawi 2063’s digitalisation goals and China’s gesture will help bridge the digital divide in rural areas.

According to Star Times Malawi Chief Executive Officer David Pan, 4,000 decoders will be distributed in the 200 villages, building on the success of the first project, which reached 500 villages across Malawi.

The move will see the recipients enjoy free TV channels for two months, after which subscription fees will range from K4,500 to K16,000, depending on bouquet.
