With the rainy season almost here, Deputy Secretary to President and Cabinet (OPC) Janet Banda, has demanded urgency in mitigating the impact of the rising waters on Lake Malawi.
Banda, who also heads the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU), made the call during a stakeholders meeting in Mangochi.
This follows a recent forecast by the Department of Metrological Services that the waters in the lake will swell again in the next rainy season.
“As a nation, we need to do more but as a Presidential Delivery Unit we are going to monitor the agreed key action points to make sure that we have a holistic approach to this issue,” said Banda.
Again, Banda called on communities staying in flood prone areas to relocate while urging owners of resorts along Lake Malawi and Shire River to build resilient infrastructures.
Priscipal Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Sanitation Elias Chimulambe said they would ensure that all the key points agreed during the meeting are implemented.
Chimulambe said one of the agreed action points was to regulate and maintain water flow at Kamuzu Barage in Liwonde.
At least 800 households remain affected while 26 households are still in camps in the district following the previous incident of rising waters in the lake.
Representatives from water and tourism sectors and Egenco, among others, participated in the meeting.
