In a recent statement, Bashir AI Bashir emphasized the need to focus on tangible achievements rather than mere years of service in government when discussing Dr. Dalitso Kabambe’s record. While acknowledging that Dr. Kabambe has spent over 20 years in various governmental roles, Bashir argues that longevity alone does not equate to effectiveness or success.
Bashir notes that many individuals have also dedicated years to public service without necessarily making a significant impact. He calls for a more in-depth analysis of Dr. Kabambe’s contributions, particularly during his tenure as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi.
Dr. Kabambe joined the Reserve Bank in 2017, a time when Malawi was grappling with high inflation rates, which stood at 18%. The bank was facing substantial financial losses amounting to billions of Kwacha. However, under Dr. Kabambe’s leadership, a remarkable turnaround occurred. He implemented effective strategies that led the Reserve Bank to post net profits from 2017 through 2020, totaling K157 billion.
In contrast, Bashir highlights the challenges faced by the Reserve Bank since Dr. Kabambe’s departure. The bank has recorded significant losses, including a staggering K600 billion loss in 2024. This financial downturn occurred under the management of his successor, suggesting that Dr. Kabambe’s leadership had a direct positive influence on the bank’s performance during his tenure.
Furthermore, Bashir points out that Dr. Kabambe left the Reserve Bank when inflation had decreased to 7% and the policy rate was at 12%. This achievement contrasts sharply with the current economic climate, calling into question the efficacy of those who succeeded him.
Bashir’s commentary serves as a reminder that the evaluation of a public servant’s performance should focus on their accomplishments and the impact of their decisions rather than solely on their duration in office. Dr. Kabambe’s track record at the Reserve Bank illustrates the significant role he played in stabilizing Malawi’s economy during a tumultuous period.
In conclusion, as discussions continue regarding the capabilities of political leaders, it is crucial to prioritize measurable achievements over tenure, as Bashir advocates. The focus should remain on how leaders can effectively serve the public and contribute to the country’s economic stability and growth.
