Habitat for Humanity Malawi has bemoaned lack of drainage systems in the country’s cities.

Speaking during the launch of the urban October campaign in Lilongwe, the organization’s national director Victor Mhango said the vice is putting many Malawians at risk of experiencing flooding and outbreaks of diseases such as cholera during the rainy season as there is also lack of sanitation in the existing drainage systems.

Mhango said there is need for more efforts to promote cleanliness by among others encouraging the construction of drainage systems starting from the household level.

Speaking on behalf of minister of local government unity and culture, Principal Secretary for the ministry Elizabeth Gomani Chindebvu said the ministry will work with various councils to promote sanitation.

On his part, Lilongwe City West member of Parliament George Zulu expressed the commitment of community members in promoting sanitation in the area.

The event was held alongside World Habitat Day and World Cities Day commemorations under the theme Youth in Action! Clean Cities, Resilient Communities: Proper Waste Management, a catalyst for a functional and improved drainage systems.”
