People on Chizumulu Island, located in Lake Malawi, have received a boost in food security thanks to a generous donation of 65 bags of maize meant specifically for the selected vulnerable households.
This initiative, led by local Member of Parliament Hon Ashems Songwe and facilitated by the Pastors Union, aimed to alleviate food insecurity in the area.
The Chairperson of Pastors Union, Pastor E A Mzizimanga recommended the member of Parliament’s gesture and emphasized the importance of community support, stating that the donation is part of ongoing efforts to alleviate food insecurity in the district.
“We acknowledged the challenges many families are facing, we hope this maize will help provide some relief,” said Mzizimanga.
The beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the assistance, highlighting the positive impact of collaboration between local leaders and religious organizations.
“This support means a lot to us, especially with the rising cost of living,” Foster Chinjati.
In an interview at the beginning of the food distribution exercise Songwe said the involvement of the clergy simply showcases the critical role of community engagement in overcoming challenges, especially in areas with limited resources
“Government will ensure no one dies of hunger, this is our community engagement in overcoming challenges affecting people’s welfare on our islands,” said Songwe.
The island, with a population of around 4,000 people, primarily relies on fishing and agriculture, growing crops like cassava and rice.
Songwe’s K5 million food donation meant for the two islands is part of ongoing efforts to address food insecurity and promote sustainable development in the district.
Despite being surrounded by Mozambican waters, Chizumulu and neighboring Likoma Islands belong to Malawi, forming the Likoma District.
