In a massive slam dunk for Northern Region’s Basketball scene, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba has pledged to secure land for the construction of an indoor basketball court, easing the city’s reliance on Katoto Sports Complex alone.
This commitment came during the signing ceremony for a three-year K45 million three year sponsorship of the Northern Zone Basketball League (NOSOBAL).
Mumba emphasized the need for youth to take pride in their contributions to the country’s socioeconomic development.
“We must support innovative ideas of our youth, let’s interact more and engage the urban youth in driving our dream and aspiration for a better tomorrow,” Mumba said amidst cheers.
The NOSOBAL sponsorship is a continuation of the talent identification program, providing a competitive atmosphere for players.
Basketball Association of Malawi’s Secretary General Peter Gomani praised Mumba’s timely investment, while NOSOBAL Chairperson Chakufwa Chihana Junior beamed with joy at the sponsorship increase.
“It’s double celebration, imagine we came for the K45 million NOSOBAL sponsorship but now it is the indoor sports facility that will alleviate challenges for minority sporting venues in the city which only depends on Katoto Sports Complex,” said Gomani.
Apart from Katoto Sports Complex, Mzuzu’s Youth Centre remains under construction, facing delays due to inadequate funding. Initiatives like Mumba’s sponsorship bring hope for the city’s youth, eager to make their mark in basketball and beyond.
This partnership is a testament to the power of private sector investment in sports development, aligning with the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ mission to empower Malawian youth.
