The Eastern Region Civil Society Network Organisations (CSOs) convened a press briefing in Liwonde, Machinga, today to discuss pressing issues affecting Malawi in the lead-up to the 2025 general elections. The event gathered several key figures in the region’s civil society and aimed to highlight the role of citizen participation and the need for a transparent and accountable electoral process.
Among the notable stakeholders present were Madalitso Banda, the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) chairperson for the Eastern region, Belinda Chimombo Somanje, Chairperson of the Machinga CSO Network, and Joseph Makwakwa, Chairperson of the Mangochi CSO, along with other regional leaders and activists.
The briefing addressed a range of critical issues facing Malawi, from governance and human rights concerns to voter registration and the importance of civic engagement. Madalitso Banda, representing the HRDC, emphasized the urgency of preparing for a fair electoral process and ensuring that all Malawians have an equal opportunity to participate in the upcoming elections.
“We are here today to raise awareness of the issues affecting the people in this region and the entire nation,” Banda stated. “It is our duty to ensure that all voices are heard and that we hold our leaders accountable in the run-up to the 2025 elections.”
Belinda Chimombo Somanje highlighted the need for a strengthened civil society presence, particularly in areas facing economic hardship. She emphasized that active participation in the political process is vital for bringing about meaningful change and addressing the challenges that communities face.
Joseph Makwakwa, representing the Mangochi CSO, also spoke on the importance of mobilizing grassroots support to foster greater transparency and accountability. He called on citizens to stay informed and engaged, reminding them that their involvement is crucial to a successful and credible election process.
The Eastern Region CSOs concluded the briefing with a call for unity among civil society groups across Malawi. They encouraged all Malawians to remain vigilant and proactive in advocating for a transparent electoral process, aiming to secure a democratic outcome that truly represents the will of the people.
