Frank Mwenefumbo condemns November 13 situation in Lilongwe ahead of demonstrations

By Burnett Munthali

Frank Mwenefumbo, a vocal opposition leader and political figure, took to his Facebook page on Wednesday, November 13, to condemn the unfolding situation in Lilongwe ahead of the scheduled demonstrations. The demonstrations, aimed at raising awareness on several national issues, were marred by a series of disruptions, including violent tactics by youths who attempted to block protestors from exercising their right to assemble peacefully.

In his post, Mwenefumbo expressed his outrage at the incidents that occurred in the city, where a group of youths reportedly obstructed major roads near the Lilongwe CCAP Church and intimidated those intending to take part in the demonstrations. According to eyewitness accounts, these youths, believed to have been hired by political forces, used violence to prevent the protests from taking place.

“This is a clear violation of the rights of the people of Malawi. The right to peaceful protest is enshrined in our Constitution, and no one, under any circumstances, should be allowed to infringe upon that right,” Mwenefumbo wrote. “What happened today in Lilongwe is a direct attack on democracy. These actions are unacceptable, and we must all stand firm in denouncing them.”

Mwenefumbo emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles and the rule of law, urging citizens to remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice and equality. He further criticized the apparent inaction of the police, who were present in the area but failed to effectively intervene and protect the protestors from the violence.

“These are not the actions of a free society,” he continued. “Malawians must not live in fear of expressing their concerns. This government must take responsibility for fostering an environment where citizens can peacefully voice their dissatisfaction without facing retaliation.”

The opposition leader also addressed the broader implications of the disruptions, noting that such incidents undermine the people’s trust in the government and its institutions. He called on political leaders, civil society groups, and ordinary Malawians to come together in solidarity to protect the rights of every citizen and ensure that those responsible for the violence are held accountable.

The situation in Lilongwe on November 13 has further fueled tensions in the country, with many questioning the government’s commitment to democratic values. As the city begins to recover from the chaos, the nation is left to grapple with the growing political unrest and its implications for the future of Malawi’s democracy.

Mwenefumbo’s post has resonated with many across Malawi, sparking conversations about the need for unity and collective action in the face of political suppression. As the situation continues to develop, Malawians are eager to see how their leaders and institutions will respond to protect the fundamental freedoms that define the country’s democratic fabric.
