Malawi witnessed a busy day in politics, governance, business, sports and crime, with several major developments dominating the national agenda.
Parliament Speaker Sameer Suleman called on Members of Parliament to stop politicising businessman Napoleon Dzombe’s proposed fertilizer manufacturing plant in Dowa. Suleman stressed that Dzombe is not a politician and said the investment could significantly improve fertilizer availability and strengthen the country’s agricultural sector.
The Ministry of Finance announced the disbursement of K7.866 billion under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to councils that met the required documentation standards for constituency development projects proposed by Members of Parliament.
Meanwhile, Minister of Energy Jean Mathanga appealed to legislators to identify communities in their constituencies that remain without electricity so the government can prioritise them for future rural electrification programmes.
On the economic front, the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) reported collecting K1.398 trillion in tax revenue between April and June 2026, surpassing its target by K20 billion. The authority is targeting total revenue of K6.2 trillion during the 2026/27 financial year.
Attorney General Frank Mbeta has returned to court seeking to overturn an injunction that has blocked the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) from relocating its headquarters to Blantyre. The government maintains that the relocation should proceed as previously directed by the administration of President Arthur Peter Mutharika.
In a tragic development, Dr. Atughanile Chomo, a 28-year-old medical doctor at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, was found dead at his Mount Pleasant residence in Blantyre. Police have launched investigations after his body was discovered with a rope around his neck and his hands and feet tied.
Police in Zomba have arrested Clifford Musamatero (54) and Saidi Nanthuwa (18) in connection with the killings of Malita John (65) and James Allan Sulira (67). Investigations into the murders are continuing.
Two people, Saidi Ali (49) and Kadewere Pilaji (36), lost their lives in a road accident at Luwiga 2 in Mangochi after a motorcycle collided with a motor vehicle.
In sports, Scorchers captain Tabitha Chawinga thanked First Lady Gertrude Mutharika for supporting the national women’s football team and urged supporters to attend the team’s fundraising dinner scheduled for 10 July.
The football fraternity was also surprised after SULOM President Gilbert Mittawa endorsed Fleetwood Haiya for the presidency of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), despite widespread speculation that Mittawa himself would contest the position.
