United Traensformation Movement (UTM) President Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, has expressed his deep concern over the country’s national debt which has reached to over MK26 trillion.
Dr. Kabambe said this debt will chain the coming generation as they will struggle to pay for the nation and at the same time individuals have a share to be contributing to government to pay back the loan.Chakwera Given 21 Days To Fix The Mess
He said from last year to this year 2026 the DPP led government has borrowed a lot adding up to the trillions of Kwachas Malawi as a country has borrowed from the international community.
Speaking to the media in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Kabambe said former President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera spent billions of Kwachas through global trotting for no impact to the country and its citizens saying he was busy inviting visitors to the State Houses distributing free for all 50 thousand Kwachas to each individual as a campaign strategy of wooing support to vote for him in the September, 2025 elections.Kabambe describes State House reports as very concerning
Kabambe said UTM as a party tried to do its part accusing the MCP led government of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera of spending unnecessarily but this landed into the deaf ears of the MCP leaders praying that one day the forensic audit will establish how much trillions of Kwachas were lost and spent for useless MCP campaigns.
He praised President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika that he is not moving up and down as what President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera was doing saying Professor Mutharika is the first President to remain at the state house observing that if he moves out, then it is a private trip.
” What we all know is that a private trip is a private one, one uses personal money,” said Kabambe.
On 100 percent tuition fees in public universities, Dr. Kabambe has called on the DPP led government of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to immediately reverse this, arguing that many Malawian poor families cannot afford to cough out from their pockets K1.3 million for just school fees only.Kabambe describes State House reports as very concerning
Kabambe has proposed to government to reduce budgetary allocation to state residencies and Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) so that the billions of Kwachas saved can support higher education so that thousands deserving needy students will not be affected by tuition fees.
He has also proposed to government to engage the Public Service Pension Scheme Trust Fund ( PSPSTF) to invest in the construction of students hostels close to public universities saying this can be a solution to the challenge of student accomodations in public universities.
