Malawians are tired and suffering: Leaders are looting, but we will change everything if we take power – Atupele Muluzi

By Burnett Munthali

United Democratic Front (UDF) leader Atupele Muluzi has expressed concern over the struggles Malawians are facing under the current leadership, describing it as “a government of looters” that prioritizes self-enrichment over the welfare of the people. Speaking at a public rally in Lilongwe, Muluzi lamented the worsening economic and social conditions in the country and pledged transformative leadership if his party is entrusted with power in the 2025 elections.

“Malawians are tired. Malawians are suffering,” Muluzi declared. “Our leaders have turned government into a tool for personal gain while the majority of our people are wallowing in poverty. If we take power, we will change everything and put the interests of the people first.”

Muluzi criticized the Tonse Alliance administration, led by President Lazarus Chakwera, for failing to deliver on its campaign promises. He highlighted the rising cost of living, unemployment, and a lack of basic services as evidence of the government’s incompetence.

“People were full of hope when they voted for change in 2020, but today, Malawi is worse off than it was before. Instead of progress, we are seeing regression,” he said.

Muluzi outlined his party’s vision to restore Malawi’s economy and ensure equitable development. He emphasized that the UDF would prioritize transparency and accountability, ensuring that national resources benefit all citizens rather than a select few.

“We want a government that works for everyone, not just for those in power. We will create jobs, empower small businesses, and support farmers with modern technologies to boost agricultural productivity,” he stated.

The UDF leader urged Malawians to make informed choices in the upcoming elections, stressing the need for leadership with integrity and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of citizens.

“If we continue to entrust the country to leaders who are only interested in enriching themselves, the suffering of Malawians will never end. It is time to choose wisely and demand better governance,” Muluzi urged.

Muluzi also unveiled the key pillars of the UDF’s agenda:

1) Job Creation for Youth – Establishing programs to create meaningful employment opportunities for the growing youth population.

2) Economic Empowerment – Supporting local businesses and industries to drive economic growth and reduce dependency on imports.

3) Restoring Public Trust – Promoting accountability and fighting corruption to rebuild trust in government institutions.

4) Strengthening Social Services – Improving access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure for rural and urban communities.

As Malawi approaches the 2025 elections, Atupele Muluzi’s message resonates with many citizens disillusioned by the current state of affairs. His promise of a better Malawi under UDF leadership offers hope to those who feel abandoned by their leaders.

However, as with any political campaign, the question remains: can Muluzi and the UDF deliver on these promises and lead Malawi into a brighter future? Only time will tell.
