The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has issued a public statement condemning the illegal practice of double registration following a recent court ruling involving Mr. Bisias Elton Nkhoma. Mr. Nkhoma was found guilty of registering twice in Blantyre City, a violation of Malawi’s electoral laws. The court has sentenced him to a fine of K200,000.00 or, alternatively, a two-year imprisonment sentence.
MEC has strongly condemned this illegal act, stressing that double registration undermines the integrity and credibility of the electoral process. The Commission emphasized that double registration distorts voter representation, thus compromising the fairness of elections. The court’s ruling serves as a stern reminder that such actions will not be tolerated and those found guilty will face appropriate legal consequences.
In its statement, MEC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding free, fair, and credible elections in Malawi. The Commission reiterated the importance of electoral laws in safeguarding democracy and urged all citizens to adhere to the rules while participating in the electoral process. MEC also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of electoral malpractice to ensure a transparent and trustworthy system.
