Public statement on allegations of voter registration of minors

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has responded to allegations regarding the registration of minors in the ongoing voter registration exercise for the 2025 General Elections. In an official statement issued today, MEC addressed public concerns, reiterating its commitment to conducting a credible, free, and fair electoral process.

Recent reports and social media commentary have raised concerns that some minors are being registered as voters, contrary to the legal requirement that voters must be at least 18 years old. The allegations have prompted calls from various stakeholders, including civil society organizations, political parties, and members of the public, for MEC to clarify its position and take action against such violations.

MEC acknowledges the seriousness of these allegations and has outlined the following measures:

1) MEC is actively investigating the claims in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including traditional leaders, school authorities, and community monitors. Any verified cases will be addressed immediately.

2) MEC has intensified voter education campaigns to inform the public about eligibility criteria for voter registration and the importance of adhering to electoral laws.

3) MEC has engaged political parties, community leaders, and monitors to enhance transparency and ensure compliance with the law.

4) MEC warns that those found culpable of facilitating or committing voter fraud, including the registration of minors, will face legal consequences as stipulated under the electoral laws of Malawi.

The Commission has reassured Malawians that mechanisms are in place to prevent and detect fraudulent activities, including:

Use of National IDs: MEC relies on the National Registration and Identification System (NRIS) to verify the age of registrants.

Cross-Checks: MEC conducts thorough cross-checks of registration data to identify anomalies.

Community Oversight: MEC is working with local monitors to ensure the integrity of the voter roll.

MEC has called upon the public to report any suspicious activities during the registration process. Citizens are urged to provide evidence or report cases of alleged minor registration to MEC or local authorities.

With Malawi’s 2025 General Elections drawing closer, MEC’s statement serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility among all stakeholders to safeguard the credibility of the electoral process. The Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering an election that reflects the will of the people and adheres to the highest standards of democracy.
