Renowned lawyer Alexious Kamangila has expressed deep humility and gratitude upon being named the Human Rights Defender of the Year 2024. Kamangila emerged as the winner from a pool of ten top human rights defenders during the International Human Rights Defenders Day celebration dinner held in Lilongwe on Monday.

In an interview with Times 360, Kamangila described the accolade as both humbling and motivating, especially considering the ongoing suffering faced by millions of Malawians.

“This award is a responsibility and gives me purpose to stand tall in pursuit of access to justice, which is only possible by ending corruption in the Judiciary,” Kamangila remarked.

The lawyer emphasized that the award symbolizes more than personal recognition, reflecting the urgent need to uphold justice in Malawi. He dedicated the honor to his daughter, Malawi; his mother; those denied justice; NGOs; the Catholic Church; and Professor Ngeyi Kanyongolo, who has been an inspiration in the field of human rights advocacy.

Kamangila’s work has been instrumental in highlighting corruption within the judicial system, a cause he considers vital for ensuring access to justice for all Malawians. His outspoken stance against corruption has earned him widespread respect and the admiration of peers in the human rights community.

The International Human Rights Defenders Day celebration, held annually, serves as a platform to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to human rights in Malawi. This year’s event highlighted the persistent challenges of justice, equality, and fairness in the country.

Kamangila’s recognition comes at a time when Malawi continues to grapple with systemic issues that hinder justice and development. His award serves as a beacon of hope for those striving
