A devastating hailstorm swept through Nathenje, Nayere, and Nanjiri trading centers in Traditional Authority Chadza, Lilongwe, leaving a path of destruction. The storm, which struck yesterday, marked the onset of Malawi’s rainy season and has rendered many people homeless, without food or shelter.
Extensive Damage to Houses and Churches
The storm destroyed numerous homes, forcing affected families into the open with nowhere to sleep. Churches were not spared either, with three places of worship suffering severe damage. Two Assemblies of God churches, one in Nayere and another at Pamtengo Wambewa, were among the casualties. Additionally, a Church of Christ in Dilawo Village was destroyed, leaving worshippers uncertain about where they will hold their services.
The full extent of the financial losses is yet to be assessed. However, the emotional impact is evident as displaced families and worshippers grapple with the aftermath of the storm.
Traditional leaders have urged people to exercise caution during storms and seek shelter to avoid injury or worse. They emphasized the importance of preparedness during this season of unpredictable weather patterns.
The affected communities are appealing for assistance, including temporary shelter, food, and resources to rebuild their homes and places of worship.
As the rainy season begins in earnest, Malawians are reminded of the need for vigilance and community support to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.
