The Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) has introduced an emergency preparedness plan aimed at ensuring continued power generation and supply during the 2024-2025 rainfall season. This initiative comes in response to a weather forecast by the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, which predicts above-normal rainfall, as well as the possibility of flooding in certain regions of Malawi.
In light of these predictions, Egenco has prioritized the safety of its personnel, equipment, and power stations, particularly along the Shire River, which plays a critical role in the country’s hydropower generation. The company is committed to ensuring that the potential challenges brought on by high water flows in the river do not disrupt operations or cause significant damage.
During a recent stakeholder engagement meeting on the emergency preparedness plan, Egenco’s Chief Executive Officer, Maxon Chitawo, explained the implications of the forecasted weather patterns. He noted that above-normal rainfall typically leads to higher water levels in the catchment areas, which can pose challenges for power stations, particularly those dependent on hydropower. This differs significantly from the 2023-2024 rainfall season, when Malawi faced drought conditions that negatively impacted power generation.
“In comparison to the previous season, where we experienced droughts, the predicted above-normal rainfall means we will face more water in the catchment areas, which can lead to operational challenges at our power stations,” Chitawo said. “We had to prepare for this scenario to minimize risks and avoid the loss of power stations due to flooding or other related issues.”
The emergency preparedness plan developed by Egenco aims to mitigate the risks associated with high-water flows by implementing measures to safeguard the infrastructure and personnel. This includes monitoring water levels in real time, improving the resilience of power stations, and ensuring that response teams are ready to take immediate action in case of flooding or other emergencies.
Chitawo emphasized the importance of collaboration with stakeholders, including government agencies and local communities, to ensure the success of the plan. He also highlighted Egenco’s commitment to improving the country’s energy security, even in the face of unpredictable weather patterns.
The company has also assured the public that it is fully prepared to maintain a stable power supply throughout the rainy season, despite the anticipated challenges. By taking proactive steps now, Egenco aims to avoid disruptions in electricity generation and ensure that Malawians continue to receive reliable power during the 2024-2025 rainfall season.
As the country braces for the potential effects of above-normal rainfall, Egenco’s emergency preparedness plan offers a measure of confidence that the power sector will remain resilient in the face of changing climatic conditions.
