The Namadzi community in Zomba has been left mourning the loss of a military pioneer and patriot, Double Two (Warrant Officer Class 2) Retired Stanslas Chagunda. His sudden death was reported by Warrant Officer Class 1 (Rtd) Willy Kamlanje, also a retired military officer residing in Zomba.

According to Kamlanje, Chagunda unexpectedly collapsed on Friday, December 27, 2024, and was later pronounced dead. The retired officer had been living peacefully in Namadzi after dedicating years of service to the Malawi Defence Force (MDF).

Retired Corporal Simple, one of Chagunda’s contemporaries, expressed deep sorrow upon hearing the news. Reflecting on Chagunda’s legacy, he stated:
“Oh, very sad. He’s one of the pioneers who conducted the first Airborne intake kino ku Malawi. He was among the airborne instructors who trained us under the observation of two German officers. These included Capt. I. G. Longwe, Lt. H. S. Hiwa, S/Sgt. McDuff Kang’ombe, Cpl. Thomas Maluwa, Cpl. Gerard Mikango, Cpl. William Banda, Cpl. Blanzio Changalusa, Cpl. Stanslas Chagunda, Cpl. Devison Chilenga, Cpl. Patrick Banda, Pte. Steven Chibwe, and Pte. Oscar Magombo.”

Corporal Simple added:
“These were the pioneers who conducted the first airborne intake here in Malawi from 16th March 1981 to 18th April 1981, following rigorous training at Luftlande und Lufttransport Schule in Germany. I vividly remember being the first jumper during our intake, and Stanislaus played a crucial role in mentoring us.”

Chagunda’s contributions to Malawi’s military development and his role as an airborne instructor have left a significant mark on the nation’s defense history. His efforts helped establish the foundation for modern airborne operations in the country.

The funeral arrangements for the late Chagunda are being coordinated by his family and military colleagues, with further details to be announced soon.

As Malawi remembers one of its most respected military pioneers, heartfelt condolences pour in from his family, friends, and former colleagues. His dedication, discipline, and trailblazing efforts will be etched in the annals of Malawi’s history.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
