Price of maize continues to surge in Zomba Markets

By Burnett Munthali

The price of maize continues to rise in Zomba, with a 50-kilogram bag now selling for K60,000 in some areas, while other regions have seen the price go up to K65,000. This price hike is most notable at markets such as Mpondabwino and Chinamwali, where a 50kg bag is being sold for K65,000, and at Songani market, where the price stands at K60,000.

One of the maize sellers, Leonard Phiri, explained that the rising prices were due to an increase in demand, particularly in the central region, where the supply has become limited. Phiri pointed out that, with the scarcity of maize, it was necessary for sellers to adjust prices accordingly to reflect the current market conditions.

Just a week ago, the price for a 50kg bag of maize was K45,000, highlighting the rapid escalation in prices.

Isaac Malemba, another concerned seller, expressed his frustration, noting that the continuous rise in prices is directly influenced by the inflationary pressures on the economy, particularly the depreciation of the local currency. He added that many buyers were finding it increasingly difficult to afford maize, which is a staple food in Malawi.

As the price of maize continues to soar, many Malawians are feeling the strain, especially as the country faces an economic crisis with rising costs of living.
