Two people, identified as Fina Matieni (17) and Martha Leji (21), both from Masili Village, Traditional Authority Maseya in Chikwawa, are missing after a canoe they were traveling in capsized on the Shire River.

The incident occurred on January 3, 2025, as the two, along with six others, were traveling from Kaseche Village to Kavalo East Bank in a canoe operated by Bernard Tensiyo (33).

According to reports, the canoe overturned when the operator tried to avoid a log and struck a heap of sand, losing control. While some victims, including the operator, were rescued by well-wishers, Fina and Martha could not be traced.

Police officers who visited the scene initiated a search operation, but their efforts to locate the missing individuals have so far been unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the survivors are reported to be in good health.

Chikwawa Police are continuing the search for the missing individuals and have issued a public appeal urging people to take safety precautions when using water transport, especially during the rainy season.

The police have also emphasized the importance of proper navigation skills and the use of safety gear to prevent similar tragedies.
