Fuel Shortage Crisis Hits Blantyre, Straining Drivers on Kamuzu Highway Near Mubas

By Burnett Munthali

Blantyre’s fuel shortage crisis reached alarming levels on Friday morning, as drivers struggled to navigate the busy Kamuzu Highway, particularly near the Mubas (Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences) campus. This issue has become a daily challenge for many motorists who are unable to refuel or continue their travels efficiently.

At the Polytechnic Total Filling Station, tensions rose as customers, eager to buy fuel, were turned away without being given an opportunity to refuel. The situation took a dramatic turn when Vice President of Malawi, Michael Usi, was spotted trying to address the crisis by intervening at the station. However, his efforts seemed to have had little impact, as the line of vehicles continued to grow longer with no fuel in sight.

The fuel scarcity has made it almost impossible for some drivers to travel, particularly along the critical Kamuzu Highway. The situation is worsened by the presence of military personnel, who briefly considered assisting vehicles in crossing the busy road. Their efforts, however, were quickly reconsidered after only a few moments of observation.

This fuel shortage has placed an undue strain on people, with many unable to make their daily commutes to work or attend important events. The lack of fuel availability, coupled with mounting tensions at gas stations, reflects the worsening state of the country’s economy.
