The Northern District’s football committees are being tight-lipped about their preferred candidates for the Northern Region Football Association’s (NRFA) elective annual general meeting, slated for February 15, 2025.
Despite several visits from interested candidates, the committees are exercising caution in releasing the names of nominees.
Etimark Luwanja, Chairperson for Mzimba District Football Committee, hinted that only one candidate has approached them for nomination, but declined to comment further.
“We are yet to sit and decide whom to be nominated, but as of now only one candidate has approached us,” said the visibly cautious Luwanja.
The secrecy surrounding the nominations has sparked intrigue, with rumours circulating about potential candidates.
Meanwhile, NRFA’s current chairperson, Chauka Mwasinga, and Secretary General, Masiya Nyasulu, have emerged as top contenders for the chairperson’s position.
Mwasinga expressed his interest in defending his chairmanship, stating, “If the affiliates want my service to continue, who am I to say no?”.
Nyasulu has also declared his intention to contest for the chairperson’s position, awaiting nomination from the affiliates.
While Desire Bellings is poised to grab the secretary General position, while Ralph Kasililika and Etimark Luwanja will battle for the post of vice chairperson of the association.
Ralph Kasililika, and Etimark Luwanja, are vying for the vice chairmanship within the association, but unconfirmed reports indicates that businessman, Lufeyo Deacon Chipanga, Joshua Chinguwo and Kakhuni Awnward Munthali seeks nominations for the positions of ordinary executive members.
The Northern District committees have only seven days to submit their preferred candidates’ names, adding to the suspense surrounding the elections.
As the football community awaits the outcome, one thing is clear – the NRFA elections will be a highly contested and closely watched event.
