In a bold move to promote Malawi’s rich cultural heritage, the Alliance Française de Blantyre is proud to present the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Sessions, a musical extravaganza that promises to mesmerize audiences and leave them yearning for more. The inaugural event, slated for January 24, will feature the internationally acclaimed artist Jimmy and the Mbakaya Band, hosted by the charismatic Waliko Makhala.
In an exclusive interview with this reporter, Waliko Makhala, the mastermind behind the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Sessions, revealed the inspiration behind the choice of Jimmy and the Mbakaya Band for the debut show. “Jimmy is an internationally acclaimed artist with an interesting music journey here at home and eventually in Namibia and South Africa, where he released sold-out albums. This is his debut show with the Mbakaya Band, and we are thrilled to have them on board,” Waliko explained.
When quizzed about the selection criteria for future performers, Waliko emphasized the need for artists who can advance the music agenda of promoting indigenous and authentic sounds of Malawi. “We are committed to providing a platform for both established and up-and-coming artists to showcase their talents. Our goal is to promote Malawi’s rich cultural heritage and inspire a new generation of musicians to explore their roots,” Waliko said.
The Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Sessions is not just a musical event; it’s a cultural movement that aims to promote Malawi’s diverse cultural heritage. Waliko revealed that the event organizers conduct extensive research into the local music scene, identifying talent and encouraging artists to draw from Malawi’s rich cultural heritage.
So, what’s in store for audiences at the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Sessions? Waliko promises an unforgettable experience, with Jimmy and the Mbakaya Band set to deliver a mesmerizing performance that showcases the best of Malawian music. “Jimmy’s Afro-fusion jazz and Malawian folk music align perfectly with our vision of promoting indigenous and authentic sounds of Malawi. We are confident that the audience will be blown away by their performance,” Waliko said.
The Alliance Française de Blantyre, a renowned cultural institution, is the perfect partner for the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Sessions. Waliko explained that the event is a mutual cultural benefit, offering exposure to the global world of Malawi’s local talents. “We are grateful for the support of the Alliance Française de Blantyre, which shares our vision of promoting Malawi’s cultural heritage,” Waliko said.
As the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Sessions prepares to take center stage, the event organizers are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the event is accessible to a wide range of audiences. Waliko revealed that the organizers plan to engage with the local community through various outreach programs, social media campaigns, and partnerships with local arts organizations.
So, what’s the biggest challenge facing the Malawian music industry right now? Waliko identified the need to create a creative industries sector, which should be visible through the establishment of Nahec. “Once this is fully operationalized, we need to have investment in infrastructure, capacity-building training of our musicians, and all artists. We also need proper professional engagement with international record and tour companies, innovative use of digital marketing and social platforms, and lastly, instill a sense of patriotism in our artists to value our cultural heritage and go back to the roots as opposed to taking pride in foreign music genres,” Waliko explained.
As the curtains prepare to rise on the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Sessions, one thing is clear – this event is set to be a game-changer for Malawi’s music industry. With its focus on promoting indigenous and authentic sounds of Malawi, the event is poised to inspire a new generation of musicians to explore their roots and showcase the best of Malawian music to the world.
