The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has praised shop owners in Zomba for adhering to recommended requirements on food safety and consumer protection. This commendation comes on the heels of the MBS closing several shops in other cities for non-compliance with the same standards.

According to MBS spokesperson Wazamazama Katatu, the bureau’s inspection team found that H Adams shop in Zomba had voluntarily quarantined expired goods, awaiting disposal. Katatu lauded this move, stating that it is a standard practice that all shops should follow. Additionally, the MBS inspection team discovered that other shops, such as Ekhaya, were also in compliance with the bureau’s requirements.

However, Katatu refrained from commenting on whether the shop owners’ compliance was genuine or a result of the MBS’s previous efforts to educate and enforce food safety standards. The MBS has been working tirelessly to ensure that all businesses in the food industry adhere to the required standards, and it seems that their efforts are beginning to bear fruit.

The MBS’s inspection team has been conducting regular checks on shops and markets across the country to ensure compliance with food safety standards. The team has been seizing expired and defective products, and in some cases, closing shops that fail to meet the required standards.

The MBS’s efforts to promote food safety and consumer protection are crucial in ensuring that Malawians have access to safe and healthy food. The bureau’s work is aligned with the government’s vision of promoting economic growth and development through the provision of safe and quality products.

In recent years, the MBS has been working to strengthen its inspection and enforcement capabilities. The bureau has established a robust inspection regime, which includes regular checks on shops, markets, and food processing plants. The MBS has also established a hotline for consumers to report any concerns or complaints about food safety and quality.

The MBS’s commendation of shop owners in Zomba is a testament to the bureau’s commitment to promoting food safety and consumer protection. The bureau’s efforts to educate and enforce food safety standards are crucial in ensuring that Malawians have access to safe and healthy food.

As the MBS continues to work towards promoting food safety and consumer protection, it is essential that shop owners and the general public cooperate with the bureau’s efforts. By working together, we can ensure that Malawians have access to safe and healthy food, which is essential for promoting economic growth and development.

MBS’s commendation of shop owners in Zomba is a positive step towards promoting food safety and consumer protection in Malawi. The bureau’s efforts to educate and enforce food safety standards are crucial in ensuring that Malawians have access to safe and healthy food.
