The Traffic Department of Kawale Police yesterday impounded 40 motor vehicles for violating various road traffic regulations. This operation, carried out in key areas, is part of ongoing efforts to ensure road safety and compliance with traffic laws.

Kawale Police Public Relations Officer Precious Phiri explained that the operation targeted motorists who contravened regulations, with particular attention to offenses such as exceeding seating capacity, driving with worn-out tires, and operating without valid permits.

“Traffic officers were deployed to strategic locations, including Chizanja, Mchesi, and the road connecting Kamuzu Institute to Area 23. Even motorists who attempted to evade the operation by using uncharted routes were intercepted by traffic riders assigned to the task,” Phiri said.

The operation primarily focused on minivans and saloon cars used for passenger conveyance in commercial transportation. Phiri emphasized that these types of vehicles, often integral to daily commuting, must adhere to strict safety standards to protect passengers and other road users.

“This operation is part of our festive season exercise, which has been instrumental in reducing road accidents by 25%,” Phiri added, highlighting the positive impact of the initiative on road safety within Kawale’s jurisdiction.

The Kawale Police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining road safety through continued enforcement of traffic regulations. They have urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to comply with all relevant laws to avoid penalties.

This latest operation underscores the police’s determination to promote safety and accountability on Malawi’s roads. With the reduction in road accidents, such measures are proving effective, ensuring a safer environment for both motorists and pedestrians.
