The low turnout at the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) rally in Tukombo on February 8, 2025, is seen as a strong indication of the overwhelming support for the incumbent member of Parliament, Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) administration, led by President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.
This signify Zikhale’s crucial role, who is the Minister of Mines having played a significant role in fostering economic growth, attracting investments, and ensuring that national resources benefit the people.
“The constituency has demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the President and his administration, thanks to visible development projects and policies that have improved the lives of the people,” state Zikhale in a telephone conversation.
So, it is not surprising that the poor attendance at the DPP rally, with most attendees reportedly ferried from Mzuzu City, suggests that the local population remains firmly aligned with the current administration.
One of the constituents Jeffrey Manda attributed this rejection to the DPP’s past governance leading to the party’s struggle to gain genuine grassroots support.
“As this September (2025) elections approach, the DPP’s failure to attract local support in Tukombo serves as a warning sign for the party’s leadership,” outlined Manda.
The government’s commitment to infrastructure, economic stability, and social development continues to resonate with the electorate, making it challenging for the DPP to re-establish trust among voters.
