Labour minister orders immediate closure of Hongsheng Packaging Limited

In a swift move to protect workers’ rights, Labour Minister Vitumbiko Mumba has ordered the immediate closure of Hongsheng Packaging Limited, located at Njewa in Lilongwe.

The decision comes after the company was found to have committed massive violations of labour laws.

According to Minister Mumba, the company has seven days to address all the challenges and rectify the situation.

A thorough inspection will be conducted by the Minister before operations can resume. In the meantime, the company has been instructed to continue paying its employees their dues.

The Minister has also outlined specific requirements for the company to meet, including:

  • Permanent Employment: All employees must be placed on a permanent basis, ensuring job security and stability.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: The company must provide personal protective equipment to all workers, prioritizing their health and safety.
  • Public Holidays: Employees must be allowed to observe public holidays, recognizing their right to rest and leisure.
  • Professional Administration: The company must employ professional staff in their administration, ensuring competent management and adherence to labour laws.

The closure of Hongsheng Packaging Limited sends a strong message that the government will not tolerate exploitation of workers.
