Lusaka, Zambia – The Zambia Women’s National Football Team, popularly known as the Copper Queens, secured a 2-0 victory over Malawi in a FIFA international friendly match played on Saturday.
The encounter, which took place as part of preparations for upcoming international fixtures, saw Zambia dominate proceedings, with goals from Avell Chitundu and Racheal Kundananji sealing the win.
From the onset, the Copper Queens displayed confidence and control, using their experience and tactical superiority to break down the Malawian defense.
The first breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Avell Chitundu found the back of the net, giving the home side an early advantage.
Despite Malawi’s attempts to equalize, Zambia’s defense remained firm, ensuring they went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Malawi showed resilience and had moments of attacking intent, but they struggled to break through Zambia’s disciplined backline.
The hosts continued to apply pressure, and their efforts were rewarded in the 79th minute when Racheal Kundananji doubled the lead, putting the game beyond Malawi’s reach.
The Copper Queens’ victory in this first friendly is a morale booster as they prepare for upcoming international competitions.
The second match between the two teams is set to take place on Tuesday at 15h00 at the REIZ Arena, where Malawi will be seeking redemption and an improved performance.
