The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers were deployed to Parliament on Wednesday, 26 February 2025, following an incident in which unknown individuals vandalized vehicles belonging to some Members of Parliament (MPs) from the opposition.

The deployment of MDF soldiers to the premises underscores the growing concerns over security within the legislative house, particularly at a time when political tensions are high. Witnesses reported that the assailants damaged several vehicles in the Parliament’s parking lot, raising fears of escalating political violence.

While the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear, speculation is rife that it may have been politically motivated, given the ongoing confrontations between the government and opposition MPs. The opposition has recently staged walkouts and protests in Parliament, accusing the current administration of failing to address the country’s economic crisis and governance issues.

Authorities have yet to make official arrests, but law enforcement agencies, in collaboration with MDF personnel, have launched investigations into the matter. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a security official stated that measures were being put in place to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of lawmakers.

Government officials have strongly condemned the attack, calling it an unacceptable act of lawlessness that threatens democracy. In a statement, a senior government spokesperson assured the public that those responsible would be brought to justice.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders have also expressed concern over the security situation, urging the authorities to take immediate action to protect all MPs, regardless of political affiliation. Some have suggested that the attack was a deliberate attempt to intimidate lawmakers and suppress dissenting voices.

As the investigation continues, Malawians are watching closely to see how the government will handle the situation. The incident has sparked national debate on the state of democracy, political intolerance, and security in the country. Whether this was an isolated event or a sign of deeper political unrest remains to be seen.
