Ken Msonda has suffered a significant defeat in the MCP primary elections for Rumphi East Constituency.
The elections, which took place today, saw Msonda securing only eight votes, a number far too low to pose any real competition.
Msonda, a veteran politician who has been a member of various political parties, including the United Democratic Front (UDF), the People’s Party (PP), and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), recently joined the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in hopes of reviving his political career.
However, his hopes were dashed as he lost the contest to Alfred Nyasulu, who emerged victorious with a commanding lead.
Nyasulu won the election with an impressive 509 votes, solidifying his position as the preferred candidate for the MCP in the upcoming general elections.
Otton Thindwa, another contestant in the race, managed to secure 285 votes, putting him in second place ahead of Msonda.
Msonda’s dismal performance, with only eight votes to his name, has raised questions about his political relevance and influence within the MCP.
Political analysts have described the results as a clear indication that Msonda’s shifting political allegiances have weakened his credibility among voters.
The overwhelming defeat suggests that the electorate in Rumphi East did not consider him a viable candidate, despite his long history in Malawian politics.
Following the results, there has been speculation about Msonda’s next move, with some wondering whether he will remain in the MCP or seek yet another political home.
Meanwhile, Nyasulu’s victory has positioned him as a strong contender in the upcoming parliamentary elections, with his supporters celebrating his resounding win.
The outcome of the primary elections in Rumphi East serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of politics and the importance of grassroots support in determining electoral success.
