State President Peter Mutharika has issued a sweeping executive order aimed at overhauling the country’s public health system, following revelations of entrenched corruption in government health facilities.
The directive comes in the wake of a joint media investigation by several news outlets,, which uncovered a syndicate involving some health workers allegedly soliciting bribes from patients for services that are legally mandated to be free.
The exposé triggered widespread public outrage, with citizens raising concerns over accountability, transparency and the erosion of trust in public healthcare institutions.
In the executive order, Mutharika outlines immediate reforms designed to strengthen supervision, tighten coordination, and enhance oversight mechanisms within the health sector. The measures include stricter monitoring systems, improved transparency in the management and distribution of medical resources, and reinforced disciplinary procedures against officers found engaging in corrupt practices.
The President has further directed relevant ministries and health authorities to urgently implement the reforms and restore integrity in public health institutions.
Government officials say the order seeks to safeguard citizens’ constitutional right to free public healthcare, curb systemic abuse, and rebuild public confidence in the country’s health delivery system.
The executive intervention signals one of the strongest responses yet to corruption allegations in the health sector, placing public officers under heightened scrutiny as authorities move to enforce accountability.
