The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) is calling for the improvement of digital literacy and increased awareness of cyber security to protect against rising cyber crimes.
This call was made by MACRA Director General, Daud Suleman, during a discussion on digital rights, laws, technology, and myths at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) in Zomba.
Suleman emphasized the importance of understanding the limitations of technology devices and recognizing that absolute privacy does not exist online.
He pointed out that it is crucial for individuals to be aware of the risks and to take necessary precautions when using the internet and digital tools.
Suleman also highlighted that MACRA’s efforts to promote digital safety are not limited to educating current users but extend to future users as well.
The goal is to ensure that when individuals first enter the digital space, they are equipped with the knowledge to stay safe and avoid common pitfalls.
Dr. Kondwani Munthali, the Head of the Computing Department at UNIMA, echoed the significance of these efforts, noting that the institution plays a crucial role in raising awareness about cyber security.
He expressed his appreciation for the timely interaction, stating that it is important for academic institutions to engage in discussions about digital literacy, as it directly impacts the society.
The meeting serves as a reminder that as the digital world continues to expand, it is essential for Malawians to understand the risks and take responsibility for their online actions.
MACRA’s initiative highlights the urgent need for a coordinated effort to combat cyber crimes and ensure a safer digital environment for everyone in the country.
