Social commentator Onjezani Kenani, has questioned the MCP led government under President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on why they have arrested Julius Zimwanda Mithi arguing that what he wrote on his face book page is the same as in Mec statement.

Kenani said the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has now acknowledged in its statement that in the course of the ongoing voter transfer process, it has received reports of missing records on the preliminary voters’ Register in some centres across the country.

In the statement from Mec signed by its Media Director Sangwani Mwafulirwa, the Commission said it has immediately commenced a process of establishing the cause of the missing records and how this will be rectified.

The Commission emphasized that the voter registration data remains preliminary until it has been provided to voters, political parties, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and other observers for inspection for purposes of verifying all entries in the voters’ Register.

It assured the public that there is no cause of alarm as the inspection and verification stage is to address cases like these, assuring the registered voters that all the details are remaining intact.

“Those whose records are missing but presented themselves to transfer their records will be assisted in due course,” reads the Mec statement in part.

The Mec called upon political parties, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the general public to remain engaged in the electoral processes and support the Commission in ensuring that elections are conducted in a fair, free and credible manner.

A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, said he has noted with a great concern that the MCP has copied and pasted what the DPP was doing in government, arresting suspects in Blantyre and entering the court for prosecutions in Lilongwe.

Kamphangala said Julius Zimwanda Mithi was arrested by Police in Mzuzu travelling all the way with him to Lilongwe as if in Mzuzu there are no courts to prosecute him describing this as another detention without trial happening in the new MCP.

He has called for unconditional release of Julius Zimwanda Mithi following confession by the Electoral body that it has received reports of missing records and is investing the cause saying this alone, the arrest of Mithi is not normal but political in natu
