UTM Party’s presidential candidate, Dalitso Kabambe, has vowed to restore the University of Malawi (Unima) to its former prestige once he takes office on September 16 this year.
Kabambe reminisced about his time as a student at Unima, highlighting that in the past, the government placed strong emphasis on education, leading to the development of competent and responsible citizens.
He pointed out that during his student years, the government allocated more financial resources to purchasing academic materials than to tuition fees.
Kabambe elaborated that the allowances provided to students were sufficient to cover tuition, as well as to purchase clothing and other necessities.
“We enjoyed three nutritious meals a day, which contributed to our good health and academic success, a stark contrast to the current state of affairs,” he noted.
He expressed confidence that if Malawian students commit themselves to their studies, the nation could achieve remarkable economic progress, comparable to that of China, within the next 40 years.
“We will also ensure that primary and secondary education systems are strengthened to adequately prepare students for higher education,” he assured.
Kabambe emphasized that his administration would prioritize the completion of the Mombera University project, in addition to establishing a new university in Bangula.
He also pledged to spearhead industrial development initiatives aimed at fostering economic self-reliance for Malawi.
He made these remarks in Zomba during a special educational forum organized by the UTM Party for University of Malawi students, focusing on economic independence.
Kabambe reiterated that his vision extends beyond education to creating an economically empowered nation through local industry and innovation.
