Kalindo alleges opposition MPs pegged K68 million to pass budget

By Vincent Gunde

Political activist Bon Kalindo has accused opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) of receiving K68 million each from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) led government to get absent from attending parliamentary sessions on the day of passing the proposed K8,076 trillion 2025-2026 budget.

Kalindo said it is sad that Members of Parliament from the opposition side have chosen money from the MCP while their constituents are in pain and sufferings for no hope for a better tomorrow as essential commodity prices including maize which is the staple food have gone up beyond the reach of many households.

He said in the country if there is an institution for organized crime is the Parliament saying out of the whole budget of K8 Trillion, a total of K67.3 billion has been allocated to President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and his wife to enjoy at the State House in Lilongwe.

Speaking through an audio clip, Kalindo has thanked Blantyre City South East Constituency parliamentarian Sameer Suleman for being a true servant leader claiming that Suleman did not go into the Parliament to enrich himself but for servant leadership.

Kalindo said if the country had 100 MPs of Suleman type, Parliament would have been the most respected institution saying the current parliament is full of thieves who do not have the welfare of the citizens at heart.

He has noted with a great concern that in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) there are parliamentarians who are deceiving former President and DPP leader Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika that they are rallying behind him while they are rallying behind the MCP for free for all money

The activist said the 21 opposition Members of Parliament who made it possible for the budget to pass for their own benefit, President Chakwera and his family did not think of Malawi first, but themselves saying this demand all constituencies to hold primary elections for the people to choose their own representatives.

Kalindo said sources have confided to him that some DPP MPs were phoning MCP demanding K30 million to stand in Parliament to move Age Limit Bill to block Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika from standing on the 16th September, 2025 elections.

“These MPs during the day, they are for DPP but at night, they are for MCP money is exchanging hands and no wonder on the day of the budget passing, they were absent from Parliament,” he said.

He has advised political parties imposing candidates not to allow primary elections to take place in the constituencies that this is political suicide and killing democracy warning parties that they should bless themselves for more independent candidates come 16th September, 2025 elections.

Kalindo has expressed his dep concern over District Commissioner for Likoma who has refused to grant permission to Malawi First from distributing free maize bags sourced by former President Dr. Joyce Banda to the people of Likoma unless they put it in writing.

He has finally told the Likoma people that Malawi First cannot write a letter to Likoma District Commissioner saying it is up to the hungry people of Likoma to meet the District Commissioner but Malawi First is going there for free food distribution exercise.
