A leading media training institution in the country, the Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) has successfully held its 26th graduation ceremony today, April 4, 2025, at the COMESA Hall in the commercial city of Blantyre where 814 graduates were awarded certificates, diplomas, and degrees in journalism.

This milestone event marks a significant achievement for the institution, which has been a cornerstone of journalism education in Malawi.

Speaking during the ceremony, Dr. Rabia Hanif, a member of the MIJ Board of Directors said, “One cannot say about journalism in Malawi without mentioning MIJ.”

Her statement underscores the institution’s pivotal role in shaping the country’s journalism landscape.

She also announced that MIJ will be holding graduation ceremonies annually, providing more students with the opportunity to celebrate their academic achievements.

She said next year’s graduation ceremony promises to be even more memorable, with the introduction of the MIJ Anthem and the announcement of a 2026-30 strategic plan.

“This plan will likely outline the institution’s vision for the future, including its goals and objectives for journalism education and training,” she said.

Dr. Hanif encouraged the graduates to uphold the highest ethical standards as they embark on their journalism careers.

She reminded them that academic success is just the beginning and that they should strive for excellence in their professional lives.

She has also urged to apply the skills and knowledge they acquired during their studies to make a positive impact in the media industry.

She added that the institution is set to introduce new programs such as business administration, project management, public relations, human resources, and other fields.

“This expansion will enable the institution to provide a more comprehensive education to its students and prepare them for a wider range of career opportunities.”

The graduation ceremony was a testament to MIJ’s commitment to excellence in journalism education. As the institution continues to grow and evolve, it is likely to remain a leading voice in Malawi’s journalism landscape.
