By Burnett Munthali

In a moment of joy, reflection, and reverence, the Catholic community in Malawi and beyond is today celebrating the 97th birthday of Bishop Emeritus Allan Chamgwera of the Zomba Diocese.

The celebration is taking place in the serene and spiritual surroundings of Thondwe, Zomba, where the retired bishop now resides.

Born on 30 April 1928, Bishop Chamgwera’s life spans nearly a century of faith, service, and leadership within the Catholic Church.

His journey into the priesthood began with deep spiritual conviction and commitment, culminating in his ordination as a priest on 7 September 1957.

For over two decades, he faithfully served in various pastoral and administrative roles, becoming a revered figure within both his local parish and the wider Catholic hierarchy.

His humility, intellect, and unwavering dedication eventually led to his appointment as the Bishop of the Zomba Diocese on 12 February 1981.

Just a few months later, on 31 May 1981, he was consecrated and formally ordained as Bishop, marking the beginning of an episcopal journey that would leave a lasting imprint on the religious and social fabric of Malawi.

During his tenure, Bishop Chamgwera oversaw significant spiritual, educational, and infrastructural growth within the diocese.

He was a shepherd not only in title but in practice—leading his flock with compassion, wisdom, and an unshakeable sense of duty to God and community.

His episcopate coincided with some of Malawi’s most formative years, both politically and socially, and he remained a moral compass throughout times of transition and challenge.

Under his guidance, the Zomba Diocese flourished with the establishment of new parishes, the construction of schools and health centers, and the promotion of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Beyond the pulpit, Bishop Chamgwera was known for his gentle demeanor, pastoral sensitivity, and a deep commitment to social justice, often advocating for the poor and marginalized.

After serving as bishop for nearly 23 years, he gracefully retired on 7 January 2004, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, leadership, and inspiration.

Since his retirement, he has remained a respected elder within the Church, often sought for counsel and spiritual guidance by younger clergy and laypeople alike.

His presence in Thondwe has become a symbol of enduring faith and resilience, and his 97th birthday offers an opportunity not only to celebrate his long life but to honor his contributions to the Church and the nation.

Many faithful from across Malawi are expected to join in the celebration—either in person or in spirit—offering prayers and tributes to a man whose life has been wholly dedicated to serving God.

For the Catholic faithful, Bishop Chamgwera’s milestone is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the enduring power of faith and vocation.

As the Church celebrates this remarkable birthday, there is also a collective prayer that the grace which sustained him throughout his priestly and episcopal ministry continues to inspire future generations.

In a world so often marked by change and uncertainty, Bishop Allan Chamgwera stands as a living testament to the beauty of a life lived in faithful service—a life rooted in love for God, commitment to community, and the pursuit of spiritual truth.

As he marks 97 years of life, the celebration in Thondwe is more than a birthday—it is a liturgy of gratitude, a reflection of legacy, and a beacon of light for the faithful across Malawi and beyond.
