When a Hyena Laughs at the Funeral, Beware – Malawi Must Not Ignore MCP’s Dangerous Rhetoric

From Comrade Jumbes Wall

In our Malawian culture, we are taught to listen not just to what is said, but how it is said, and who is saying it.

“A man is not killed by a lion he sees, but by the one he ignores.”

Today, Malawi must not ignore what is being whispered – or rather, shouted – by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Another shadow has been cast over our democracy, and once again, death threats are being cloaked in political rhetoric.

Zebron Chilindola, a senior member of MCP, stood boldly at a public rally, in the very presence of President Lazarus Chakwera, and declared that the party would “deal with Kabambe.”

These are not just political jabs – they are echoes of the chilling words once thrown towards our late Vice President, Saulos Klaus Chilima. Back then, we brushed them off as political heat.

“The owl cried last night, and the child died in the morning.” It happened. We must no longer take such threats lightly.

We remember when Gotani Hara, Chimwendo Banda, Mkaka, and even President Chakwera himself, made similar veiled attacks toward Chilima today he is gone, and the nation mourns in confusion and pain.

“When the roots of a tree begin to decay, it spreads death to the branches.”

These threats are not just dangerous—they are a rot at the base of our democracy.

Let this be clear: Malawi is not the property of any political party.

It does not belong to the MCP, nor any individual. It belongs to Malawians.

All of us From the lakeshore to the hills, from the market women to the students, we are all equally free to participate in our democracy.

We cannot live in fear of political assassinations or organized threats.

The days of dictatorship must never return. “When the leopard wants to eat its cubs, it first accuses them of smelling like goats.”

We want to warn the Malawi Congress Party: you are showing the signs of a regime in panic – the final kicks of a dying horse.

The people are watching, and this time we will not be silent. History is watching.

The blood of those who died for this democracy is watching.

As we fast move towards 16 September, let it be a turning point. Let Malawians rise boldly to elect a government that upholds human rights, protects political plurality, and values life above power.

We want leaders who will inquire into the Chikangawa tragedy, expose the truth, and help our nation heal. Not more fear. Not more silence. Not more political death.

“He who digs a grave for his enemy should dig one for himself.” The MCP must remember: the people of Malawi have awoken. And this time, we will not blink.
