MEC dismisses claims of MBC being sole broadcaster for 2025 Elections

By Burnett Munthali

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has come out strongly to refute allegations that it has appointed the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) as the only official broadcaster for the 2025 General Elections.

In a public statement, the Commission clarified that the claims, initially published by Malawi Voice, are both false and misleading.

MEC emphasized that it has not designated any media house, including MBC, as the exclusive broadcaster for the upcoming electoral process.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, openness, and fair access to information during the election period.

To ensure inclusive media participation, MEC said it will soon issue an open call for media accreditation.

This call will be extended to all interested and registered media institutions—whether public, private, or community-based.

The accreditation will allow these media houses to cover all stages of the elections, including critical events at the Main Tally Centre.

According to the Commission, the process will be carried out in a fair and non-discriminatory manner.

MEC noted that the goal is to ensure balanced, accurate, and credible coverage of the elections by a wide range of media stakeholders.

The Commission has urged all political actors, journalists, and the general public to disregard the false claims being circulated online.

It further called upon stakeholders to rely solely on official MEC communication channels for verified information regarding the electoral process.

This timely clarification comes as the country prepares for a crucial electoral cycle, where trust and access to information will be pivotal in maintaining public confidence.

MEC has made it clear that it remains a neutral and professional body that does not favor any particular broadcaster or media entity.

As preparations continue, the Commission assured Malawians that its commitment to democratic principles, media freedom, and transparency remains unwavering.
